The Urban League of Greater Southwestern Ohio (ULGSO) has led the charge in breaking the cycle of generational poverty across Cincinnati and Dayton. Through programs like SOAR, Black Women in Tech, and Building Futures, ULGSO empowered 693 individuals to secure meaningful, livable wage careers.
With support from the Small Business Development Center and the Economic Empowerment Center, ULGSO helped 402 individuals start or expand their businesses in 2023, creating 144 new businesses. Over $6.7 million in financing was secured.
ULGSO's financial empowerment programs, such as Wealth Building Wednesday and Black Men & Money, provided 2,122 individuals with essential financial literacy tools.
The African American Leadership Development Program (AALDP), a flagship initiative now in its 30th year, continued to shape the future of Greater Cincinnati's Black leaders. Alongside this, the Urban Champions program for youth offered leadership, mental health awareness, and civic engagement training to empower the next generation of community advocates.
In 2023, ULGSO launched the Urban Expungement Project, which helped over 60 individuals clear their criminal records, removing obstacles to employment and housing. The Holloman Center for Social Justice also expanded its advocacy efforts after opening it's doors to create a space to further engage in policy reform and driving systemic change.
The Urban League was named 2023 Nonprofit of the Year in the Outreach Programs Category by Cincy Magazine.
The Urban League was honored by the Cincinnati Chapter of the NAACP with the 2023 Community Outreach & Partnership Award (Nonprofit) at the 2023 Freedom Fund Dinner.
On October 8, 2023, House Minority Leader Congressman Hakeem Jeffries stopped by the Holloman Center for Social Justice to tour the space and learn more about its work and impact on the community.
On October 13, 2023, actress, comedian, and daytime talk show host Sherri Shepherd visited the League for a meet-and-greet luncheon with the Urban League staff and an engaging conversation with Ashley Kirklen of WLWT Channel 5.
