The Annual Glorifying the Lions Award is a prestigious honor that celebrates seasoned community leaders who have demonstrated a strong commitment to serving the community.
Since 1994, the Urban League’s Legendary Lions Society has recognized and celebrated outstanding individuals who have made a lasting impact in our community through their selfless dedication, commitment, and service to others. The title of this award is derived from an old proverb of the Igbo people of Nigeria. “Until lions have their own historians, tales of the hunt will always glorify the hunter.” The message is that no telling of history is complete until both sides are told.
Distinguished leaders age 65+ who have positively contributed to the Greater Southwestern Ohio community in impactful and lasting ways. A list of previous honorees is below.
Honorees will be recognized at the 31st Annual Glorifying the Lions Luncheon on Wednesday April 9, 2025; 11:30 am -1:30 pm at the Cintas Center and during the annual Glorifying the Lions TV Special broadcast by WLWT Channel 5.

Alva Jean Crawford’s entire career has centered on encouraging young people to pursue education for success. A graduate of Tennessee State University with a B.S. degree in mathematics and a master’s degree in education from Xavier University, Mrs. Crawford served as a mathematics teacher and school counselor for 32 years in 5 states including the Cincinnati Public Schools.
Mrs. Crawford took a small break from teaching to join the fight for integration. The Urban League of Memphis, TN approached her with the opportunity to apply to be the first Black ticket agent in the mid-South for American Airlines. She applied and landed the job, spending two years as an agent before returning to teaching.
Passionate about music and the arts, Mrs. Crawford has been a dedicated volunteer for numerous arts organizations.
